Chapter 17

Candles illuminated the studio as Angela carefully selected the music to go with her most soothing class. She pressed play at a familiar playlist of slow gentle gongs and flutes over intermittent sounds of waves lapping at shores. The music courted the room and helped set the mood for what was to come. It was Angela’s least active class as it mostly involved lying down and listening to Angela whisper soothing words of comfort and helpful reminders. Often, she based it around things she herself was going through or needed to hear. One week it was all about having faith in the universe, another week she focused on letting go of ego and attachment. The class only took place once a week. Any more than that and she feared her words would become trite. Tonight she wasn’t entirely sure what to focus on. Part of her wanted to focus on having healthy boundaries, but she couldn’t think of a way to tie it in enough with the principles of yoga that underpinned the sessions. Perhaps she could talk about having integrity and standing by your highest values? Taking her place, she decided to keep it generic. It could be unwise to let herself get talking about the subject and risk oversharing in the moment.

As the students came in and put their mats down, Angela didn’t recognise a single person. The class was nearly full at fourteen. Double what she used to think was a good turnout for this class. A small rush of nerves flowed through her body. She wanted them to love the class and keep coming back. This was all she wanted for her students, and anyone who did yoga. Since they were at capacity, space was a bit tight. The basket for the blankets had been pushed aside and plant pots moved up onto the window ledge. One more person could fit in, but that was pushing it. As the class found their places and sat down, the atmosphere was rather tense. As far as she’d heard, no one had said a word to each other, or to her. Perhaps she should have waited until the class officially started before putting the music on. A gong banged out from the speakers as she bowed her head and pressed the palms of her hands together in front of her chest, making it look planned though it wasn’t.

Angela smiled. ‘Hi everyone.’

The students smiled back nervously.

As Angela went into her teacher mode, her nerves disappeared and she fixated on creating the levels of safety and relaxation that were required. ‘Thank you so much for joining me this evening. We’ll be going into some deep relaxation during our time together, taking the opportunity to feel good, de-stress, and bring a wee bit of balance to our bodies and also to our minds and our emotional selves as well. You’ve all got your blocks and blankets, I see, so you are all set to go. Take this time at the beginning to find a sitting position that works for you and we’ll begin.
